Information unraveled by the BMA has recently given us the intel that across the entire UK, mentally ill patient are being forced to be separated from loved ones or even sent to travel hours across the country for some form of help.
The BMA have shone light upon this situation once before in 2018, realising an article of how the mentally ill patients were separated form their familes and given a lack of support once split from those loved ones.
A study carried out by ‘The Doctor Magazine‘ has discovered that from 2018 to 2020 the trust in England data that can be juxtaposed lead them to the fact that 47 percent placed patients in beds that are classed as ‘out of position’ over 100 times across the past year.
With this, a recorded seven trusts(at least) have almost increased the amount of out of area patients but double the amount in the past 12 months from august 2020.
Although there where some deficits across trusts, placement of OOA have increased by a mighty 38 percent. This was spread across all 40 trust that where investigated in 2018.
After being reviewed by the BMA, it has almost been confirmed that the government will near enough have no chance in reaching its target of eliminating out of area patient placement by next year.
In order to end this troubling practise, the BMA now estimates that at least 1,000 extra beds are required for mental illness, with fears that the effects of Covid-19 will only boost bed demand.
The BMA calls for a realistic strategy to hire and retain more workers to build up the ability of mental health facilities around the country, greater funding for community mental health services, a greater review of high out-of-area usage areas to inform the immediate implementation of CCG level plans, as well as increasing the number of mental health beds as outlined above.
